Nottingham business RAD Distributions has seen cost savings of just under £73,000 a year since fitting VL-Fleet.
Not only has it been able to remove one vehicle and two members of staff with no negative impact on revenue or service levels, but its monthly fuel costs have dropped 26 per cent.
In real cash terms that means a reduction in fuel spend from £10,500 a month to £7,800 a month.
Since fitting the GPS tracking system and actively using the data provided, the company has been able to get much more out of its fleet.
“VL-Fleet allows us to plan routes with greater efficiency, cutting down the number of miles our vehicles are covering,” explained the firm’s owner Rob Dexter.
“It has also allowed us to predict more accurately when vehicles will be available for work again, allowing us to reduce the costs of the business with no negative impact on service. In fact, because we can instantly see data through a web browser, we have been able to give more accurate estimates of arrival times. And having tracked vehicles has helped us win business from customers who want peace of mind that their goods can be located at any time.”
The business delivers goods to customers around the UK from a base just off the M1 in Nottingham.
It has seen a number of other benefits from using VL-Fleet:
- Reduced speeding: Vans are no longer driven at excessive speed thanks to speed alerts. This keeps the fuel bill under control, maintains the company’s reputation, and helps protects drivers under new Corporate Manslaughter legislation

- Reduced insurance premiums: They have been reduced by five per cent
- Reduced Congestion Charge fines: The system alerts the driver and head office when the vehicle is entering the congestion zone, reducing admin and fines
In one case, the business also managed to avoid a false vehicle accident claim.
Rob explained: “We were contacted by the Police following a claim by a member of the public that their vehicle had been hit by one of our fleet. VL-Fleet comes with vehicle activity reports, which show the time, speed, location and direction of travel of all vehicles at any time.
“When we compared the date, time and location of the accident to the vehicle activity reports, it was clear none of the fleet were anywhere near the accident. Needless to say the claimant didn't pursue this any further!”
